A painting of John Wesley preaching outdoors to a village crowd

Where it all started

The field-preaching has stopped.
The open door hasn't.

Methodism started as a fairly scrappy, outdoor sort of faith. In the 1700s, John Wesley took preaching out of grand buildings and into fields, marketplaces and mining villages. He went anywhere people actually were, whether or not they had the right pew, the right coat, or the right connections.

It wasn't especially neat, and it wasn't always welcomed. But it worked because it treated faith as something for everyone, not a privilege for the well-connected few.

Water Orton Methodist Church still carries that same spirit: practical, unpretentious, and glad to have you, however you arrive.

Do all the good you can, by all the means you can, in all the ways you can, in all the places you can, at all the times you can, to all the people you can, as long as ever you can.

A door that's stayed open

Thanks to the kindness and generosity of people who give their time, energy and care, this place stays open for the whole community. Whether you come to worship, share a coffee, join an activity, celebrate a milestone or simply need somewhere welcoming to be, there is a place for you here.
